Important Update:
Our Deregistration and Consent Request templates have been updated to reflect the new legislation effective from August 2024.

Deregistration & Consent Request

Do you have questions about deregistering your child from school and home educating?

You have the right to home educate your child without needing permission. However, the process can differ depending on the school your child attends.

Deregistration Steps

Mainstream Schools:

  • Simply write a letter to the headteacher notifying them of your decision to home educate.

Special Schools:

  • You'll need written consent from your local authority before deregistering your child.

Important Note:
Even if your child has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), you can still remove them from mainstream school.

Writing a Deregistration Letter

While a formal letter isn't strictly required, it's recommended. Clearly state that you're withdrawing your child and they will be receiving education elsewhere (home education).

Consent for Special Schools

Consent for removing your child from a special school shouldn't be unreasonably withheld. Home education permission isn't required.

Removing Your Child's Name from the Register

Once your child stops attending school and you've notified the headteacher (mainstream school) or obtained local authority consent (special school), the school will remove their name from the register and inform the local authority.
